Satellite Internet Explained
How it works and why it matters
We live in the information age. A post-industrial age, a new space age where the world is connected. Satellite internet is a culmination of these characteristics. An infrastructure innovation, built at great industrial scale, leveraging space technology to further internet connectivity—globally.
Satellite internet is not a new invention. We have operationalised it decades ago. However, the satellite internet megaconstellations of today mark a new age of space-based internet. They consist of hundreds and thousands of satellites in the Lower Earth Orbit, working together to beam a global internet.
Given the penetrative, foundational and integrative ability of the internet, satellite internet technology holds immense potential for military strategy and economic productivity. Its inherent dual-use nature also creates security and regulatory challenges. It is imperative that we understand this technology before we go about using, investing or governing it.
I have written a paper, a first in a series planned around satellite internet megaconstellations, where I explain how it all works and what it is being used for. Give it a read: takshashila.org.in/research/satellite-internet-explained
